About The Institute

The Austin Learning Centre has been in operation since January 1997. The Centre is owned by Catherine Austin (MA. Glasgow) and Laurence R. Austin (BA. UCWI - London). They are the Principal and General Manager respectively. All the teachers are university graduates and are experienced. Catherine Austin, who comes from Scotland, has been teaching English all her professional life. She taught in Scotland and England, before coming to Trinidad where she has been teaching for many years. In Trinidad, she has taught at two of the most prestigious high schools, where she has been the head of the English Department. She has also been the Dean of the sixth form (16-19 year olds) in one of these schools.

English as a Second Language

The Austin Learning Centre has taught ESL almost from its inception in 1987. We have tutored the Ambassadors, their relatives and the staff members of six embassies in Trinidad. We have also tutored wives of expatriate employees and full-time students. Most of our students come from Latin American countries, e.g. Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama and Venezuela. We have even successfully tutored a native of the Republic of China.

Location

The Austin Learning Centre is located four houses from the Queens Park Savannah which has been described as the "lungs" of Port of Spain. The Savannah is also the cultural centre of the city. It is a large park, about 4km in circumference, where people jog, walk, or just sit and enjoy life. Many games are played in the Savannah - even baseball is played there occasionally by the Latin Americans, Americans and Canadians who live in Trinidad. The Austin Learning Centre is also directly opposite the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is within easy reach of all the embassies in Trinidad. We are also near to:

  • public tennis, basketball and volleyball courts (only 3 blocks)
  • Our national museum (only 3 blocks)
  • Two cinemas (10 minutes walking)
  • The Shopping District in our Capital (15 minutes walking)
